How long have you worked for Affinity Health Group?
I have been with Vantage and Affinity for 9 years. This was my first job I accepted coming out of PT school. I graduated from University of Central Arkansas in August 2012 with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
What inspired you to go into physical therapy?
I knew I always wanted to go into the medical field, and I had several family members that were in the medical field that always had me interested in it. When I was in my Sophomore year of College I got the opportunity to work at a local Physical Therapy clinic that really grew my curiosity into the field. After that I really got to work with more Therapists in the area. I learned to appreciate the relationships that were formed between the therapist and the patient. I am an active person in general and I love being in a job that allows me to be active and hands on with my patients.
What is your day-to-day like?
My position is Therapy Services Coordinator for Affinity / Vantage. My day to day will change quite a bit from week to week. My primary job is to evaluate and treat patients in the clinic at HMC. We treat patients of all different ages and diagnoses. My concentration is in Orthopedics, and I am a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist (One of three between Monroe and Ruston). My job also includes administrative and staffing duties for the Health Management Center / Therapy Department. I also have the opportunity to work with the Vantage Medical Directors helping with Authorization Reviews, as needed.
What do you like most about your role?
My favorite thing about my job is the patients and co-workers that I get to spend every day with. Our clinic is fortunate that we get to see a wide variety of patients and populations which I love to meet and grow with. In therapy we get to spend one-on-one time with our patients a couple times a week for multiple weeks, which allows us to build strong relationships with the people that we treat. Our clinic is also a big family and a lot of us have been here for several years! We have built strong friendships which makes work a lot of fun for us in the clinic. As the Coordinator of the clinic I have been able to help build and grow with Affinity. As a team we have been able to set up a fantastic therapy clinic to provide patients with high quality care and an amazing group of therapists.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Most of my time now outside of work is taken up by my two young kids. I have a 3 year old little girl (Emery) and a 1 year old little boy (Myles). We live in Ruston where my wife works as the Associate Director of Baptist Collegiate Ministry at LA Tech. Personally, I love to be outdoors and I really enjoy long distance running, trail running, and mountain biking. I have completed 1 marathon, 9 half marathons, and several 10-20 mile trail races.
Participating in marathons is a lot of hard work! Does your role as a physical therapist help you train?
Physical Therapy is an active job and we really promote a healthy lifestyle. This motivates me to live a healthy lifestyle as well. Having a background in Physical Therapy and Exercise Physiology does give me a good knowledge base into training and how to prepare my body to train for longer distances. We also have a great staff at our clinic who really encourage each other to stay in shape and accomplish different goals. Having a good support group like this really helps me in training for different races.
